We were invited by Jo Ray, who we met at the Bookville Publishathon in 2006 to give a seminar at Hull College within the art department where she was working. Instead of the usual method of delivery: talk about what we do, talk about what we've done, Q&A session etc. we decided to talk about what we do through questions alone. This allowed the audience to ask us anything that they felt was relevant, rather than us assuming what they might find interesting. This also gave the session a more informal feel and although it was difficult for some of the audience to understand our approach, some very useful questions were asked which forced us to consider our position on the spot. It also gave us the opportunity to ask questions back to the audience, which is an unusual approach and yielded some interesting thoughts and developments.
Following the session we invited the audience for participation in a tour of the college, looking for resources that would have otherwise been hidden. With Jo as our member of staff and about 3 or 4 student participants, we set off and discovered a hidden recording studio. We also joined in a lecture from another class. Following this we traversed the whole site, looking for more obscure resources. We found some excellent facilities in the theatre and had a very interesting conversation with science lab technician.
Below are some photos of the seminar in progress and the poster advertising the session.
